Chapter 1 (In Jail)

At a certain time in the land of Suren, the next page in history was about to be written.

In the depths of Sur Castle’s dungeon, a young a red-haired girl with small black wings, and a long black rope-like tail was dreaming of events, yet to unfold. The devil girl was lost in a forest, and all she could do was run from the monster’s chasing her. A root underfoot caught her, and she tripped and fell. Giving up, the girl let her body sag, when something grabbed her hand. Cringing, expecting to be eaten, she wasn’t expecting to be dragged back into a run.

A boy had grabbed her hand and pulled her forward. He called to her, “You can’t give up now, we’re just getting started.” She looked to her savior, but all she could really see was a short boy with red hair. Suddenly a scream ran through the jail cells and Yatsui Devisk woke up immediately.

Prisoner Report   # 566

Name: Devisk, Yatsui
Sex: Female
Person: Demon
Race: Devil
Age: 16
Hair: Red (Magik, Moderate Power)
Eye: Red

In the land of Suren, those with red hair had the amazing ability to use magik. But one person wanted to learn all he could about Magik users, and soon, town raids for anyone red-haired was a common and tragic event. The scream sparked Yatsui’s memory of her mother trying to save her from the kidnappers, but she only ended up dying for her troubles.

The door to the jail opened and light shone in, causing most of the imprisoned to cringe at the light. A dark-hooded figure stepped in, and that’s when someone screamed. If he came to take people, everyone knew, if one person is taken, they won’t be coming back. If a group leaves, one may come back if they are lucky and powerful.

Yatsui tried to rouse her cell-mate, but she had been sick the last few days and unable to get up. The cloaked figure stood in front of Yatsui’s cell and stared in from under his dark hood. She glared at her captor and shouted, “She’s not well, you can’t take her!”

An evil laugh echoed in the jail and the figure pointed at Yatsui, “Ohh, no Miss Devisk. I’m only here for you.” Terror struck her as she backed away from the door. The figure held out his hand and a low humming sound emanated in the air. Suddenly an invisible force grabbed her and pulled her away from her cell. The last Yatsui knew of the cell were sobs of relief coming from the more fortunate inmates.

Keeping her guard up was Yatsui’s only goal during the next few hours. She was incredibly suspicious when her captor allowed her to bathe and eat, and feel like a normal demon again. Waiting for trouble she was finally taken into a large room made of polished white stone, and out the windows covering the opposite wall, the stars in the night sky shone brightly.

Staring off into space, her captor finally spoke again, “Do you know the secret of the shooting star?”

Remembering where she was, she put up her guard again. Glaring at the man she said, “Everyone in Suren knows that after the age of 5. The shooting star comes nearly every 200 years and delivers a special person. Now what do you want with me?”

Ignoring her question, the man went on, “Very good, but not quite. The person who comes to this world and all of their family is said to be gifted with the god’s own power. Which is just what I need for the next phase of my research.”

Confused, Yatsui asked, “What do you mean, isn’t that just a fairy-tale? There isn’t really some amazing god-demon is there?”

“Ohh, but there is my dear Miss Devisk, and it’s on its way right now. That’s why I need you to be a good delivery girl for me and go bring this demon here. Your Magik should be powerful enough if you move fast enough.”

Yatsui took a few steps back and raised her arms in defense, “Why would I do something for a worthless thing like you?”

This angered the figure, he suddenly rushed forward and reached a scaly green hand out from under his cloak. Snake-like yellow eyes glared angrily at her from under his hood. He shouted at her, “YOU’LL DO IT BECAUSE I’M THE OVERLORD! I CONTROL EVERYTHING HERE IN SUREN!” He seemed to regain his composure and said, “Besides, YOU really won’t be doing anything.”

The overlord’s eyes shimmered and Yatsui recognized it for a mind-altering spell. “Why of all the dirty…” She started to swear, but it was too late, she was already starting to lose consciousness from the spell. The last thing Yatsui saw before blacking out was a bright star streaking across the sky.

The overlord called one of his minions, “Track where the star falls and bring Miss Devisk here to a place nearby, and keep her informed of her target. I won’t have any mistakes, will I?”

“No your highness,” the shrouded minion bowed.

The overlord began to laugh as the minion took Yatsui and carried her in the direction of the shooting star.
