Chapter 2 (First impressions)

Birds were chirping a loud annoying chirp, and the sound began to rouse a boy sleeping in the middle of a forest clearing. He sat up and rubbed the sleep from his eyes, and then looked around to figure out where he was. He blinked a few times and rubbed his eyes again to check that he wasn’t seeing things. “Wait… Why am I sleeping in a forest?” The boy asked, but was responded with only loud chirping birds.

Looking around, he was surrounded mostly by yellow-needled, pine-like trees, and a few short bushes with large, red leaves. It was like autumn was making a really weird effect on pine trees now. The boy stood up and walked towards one of the bushes. The leaves felt like any normal leaf, and didn’t look like it was about to fall off like in the autumn however.

It was an interesting mystery, but one he quickly forgot about when something rustled in the bushes behind him. Hearing this, he spun around and backed up, when he saw a girl come into the clearing, holding a tray of food.

She smiled sweetly at him and said, “Ohh, you’re awake now I see.” The girl was a fairly tall person, with pale skin, and long, red hair. Her blue eyes gave the sense of staring right through him, but seemed kind at the same time. Her two main points the boy noticed, was her pointed ears, and the fact that she was wearing a maid’s outfit.

The boy was about to ask something, when he smelled the food and his stomach growled. She girl laughed a little and handed him the tray of food, insisting that he eat it. The boy thanked her for the food, and filled himself up with a brown soup, plain bread roll, and a glass of water. All the while, she just watched him eat happily.

As he finished his meal he asked the girl, “So, who are you?”

She seemed surprised at the question, then realized, “Ohh, how silly of me, I’m Synalia, a demon elf. Currently I work as a maid for the Ayra family.”

He looked unbelievingly at her, and asked, “You’re a… demon?”

“Well, yes. What a silly question though, all the people here in Suren are demons. If not, well…” Synalia smiled a little bit. The boy felt fairly uncomfortable right then. Synalia then asked, “So I’ve introduced myself, now tell me who you are.”

Just as he was about to reply the bushes behind Synalia rustled and a large wolf, with silver-blue fur, ran up to her and sat down. The wolf looked meaningfully at Synalia, as if asking or telling her something. After a few moments of awkward silence, Synalia said, “Thank you Suree for that report, but you needn’t stay silent to our guest here.”

The boy heard a voice in his head, he assumed to be coming from the wolf, My apologies, Mistress. I am Suree, a familiar silver wolf for my Mistress Synalia. Who are you?

“Ahh yes, we were just getting to that. I’m very curious too, would you mind greeting yourself?” Synalia asked.

“Well I’m…” the boy started, “Umm. I am… Wait, who am I?”

“Really? You mean you don’t know who you are? Do you know where you’re from? Anything at all?” Synalia asked excitedly.

“I’m a human from Earth, umm, I know a lot about earth and where I come from but, I don’t remember anything about myself… I think,” The boy said with a puzzled expression.

I’ve never heard of Earth before, and the human race is only the stuff of myths and legends. If you lie you will have to try harder than that. Suree growled.

“Why would I make that up? I’m just as confused as you ar-… wait, why would humans be a legend?”

“Because the story is that every two-hundred years, a single human from a powerful family would come to this world. And if what you say is true, things are not looking good for you.” Synalia replied.

“So I’m human, what bad things could that possible mean for me?” The boy questioned

“Hmm…” Synalia thought, “If you’re a powerful human, there is saying that you will help the world. Or you could harm the world too. Some say that your offspring will be a powerful addition to the demon race you, ahem, “couple” with. But I think worst of all is that the Overlord of Suren is trying to get his hands on the most powerful Magiks he can find.”

The boy said, “So I got most of that, but what’s Suren, who’s this overlord person, and did you just say magic?”

Looking him over Synalia commented, “You really do know nothing, do you? Very well then, Teacher Synalia shall tell you things about this world. But first… I’ll need something to call you by other than just ‘you’.”

Suree stepped forward, If I may give a suggestion mistress, how about calling him Nanashi? It’s an ancient word meaning ‘Nameless one’.

Synalia laughed, “A mysterious name that literally means what he is. Suree, you’re brilliant! Very well then, from now on boy, you are Nanashi!”

          “Wait, what?” Nanashi asked
